From mirror glass to high-tech film - Huhtamaki Films Forchheim is celebrating its 160th anniversary

1 September 2014

More than half a million euros – about 11,000 gulden at the time – is the sum that Joseph Pfeifer Morgenstern and Moritz Frankenthal initially invested. A princely sum that has paid off. With the purchase of the concession in 1854, the two Fürth-based mirror anufacturers laid the foundation for today's success: films made in Forchheim are a component of many products and packaging materials on all five continents. Huhtamaki Films is celebrating 160 years of existence at its site in Franconia.

"We're proud of our history and our mutual success," says Gernot Becker, General Manager of Huhtamaki Films Europe. "A lot has changed over the last few decades. Even in turbulent times, we've managed to win over customers with our quality and innovation." With sites in Brazil, the USA and Thailand, the company is able to respond to the needs and desires of its customers in a tailored way. Becker says: "This has given us a leading position globally as film experts."

In-house development

Most of the films are designed and developed at the in-house pilot facility in Forchheim, where the team consisting of 20 R&D and application technology experts fine-tunes the compositions of the films, which are often processed further as a product component or as packaging. They test, for example, which new raw materials can be used or how the formulations behave in the production process at the customers' sites. "Our customers' needs always take priority with us," Becker stresses. The four product innovations that have

been launched onto the market this year have also been designed and tested by the Huhtamaki Films team: the soft Cloth+, the Straight+ with its bidirectional tearing properties, the quiet Discreet+ and the environmentally friendly Sustain+. All four films were successfully presented to the public at international trade fairs such as INDEX14 in Geneva and interpack in Duesseldorf.

A thank-you to the staff

160 years of films in Forchheim – a special birthday is something to be celebrated by the whole family. "The commitment of our employees is huge – at all times," site manager Becker lauds. That is why, as a thank-you, all employees are invited to a company party on 19 December and the workforce and their families to a visiting day on 27 September. Films made in Forchheim are in demand both globally and locally: on this day approximately 600 employees and their families have booked tours of the production halls to experience how Huhtamaki Films Forchheim services this demand

Excellence in engineered film solutions, service and innovation.
